Some would prefer to do the traditional....

And some prefer a more contemporary approach....

I prefer a combination of both with the more unexpected elements....

and I know this just might be the ticket for Dani!

Is it the time of year or what? Must be.....the holidays are over and the decorations are put away, and I'm getting inundated with requests for help!

Not only am I working on my projects (and they are coming along fine.....photos coming), but I have been working with three other ladies on various projects for their homes. A couple of the ladies are good friends, but one in particular means a lot to me.

Cathy's in love with industrial looks. I really loved this image of Hillary Swank's Manhattan apartment from the Elle Decor December issue and thought it would work beautifully.

Cathy has an uninterrupted wall that spans the width of her home. Part of her problem is it encompasses her family room and dining room. We've been trying to come up with an idea of how to make a separation without completely cutting off the two from each other. This treatment feels like a jumping off point.

The plan? A wall with this reclaimed paneling that spans a built in of two bookcases flanking either side of her sofa. We intend on building the bookcases and finishing them with a similar patina as the paneling. It takes a bit of imagination, but the idea is to mix it up with mirrors that back the bookcases. Kind of like this, just not so compartmentalized and possibly with the lower third of the bookcase a cabinet with door fronts.

I loved the idea of a ornate mirror in a gloss white on the paneling behind her sofa.....

kind of unexpected, but she's just a little hesitant.

Perhaps a more contemporary idea like this would make her swoon.

Hmmmmm....I think I might like this even better.

But, in keeping with the industrial look she is striving for we may need to do something even a little more unexpected....

her husband is in the aviation industry and has had an antique propeller sitting around for years in their garage just waiting for someway of working it into the house. Cathy hasn't been too receptive to the idea, that is until now. This could be a good way to get her husband motivated to help me make this whole concept come to fruition.

I'm thrilled to help and can't wait to see how it turns out. I know whatever we end up with will be stunning! I promise to keep you posted too!

Being gone from the retail end of my business for these last few years, has given me a chance to rethink my life. I know that there are times I miss the excitement of having my own place to live vicariously through. I decorated and edited and re-imagined my life through the eyes of my clients....having an outlet to be whomever I felt like being at that moment was exhilarating. I lived many different lives through what my boutique offered. I could be glamorous one day and earthy the next, all through the decor of the shop.

But, I had another life that needed tending. And he still needs me.....maybe more than ever.

However, I have been afforded the luxury of pondering what it is I want my home to be during my hiatus. I have reworked, and decorated my abode many times over....one room at a time. I am in the process of finishing up my dining room and have come to a stand still over.......curtains!

There is a voice....one that tells me to go with what it is I began with

Or the one that is telling me to mix it up......don't do the expected

note......the one in the middle is my fav.

So, which voice is speaking to me today? Hmmmmmmm.

Yah, it's been a long time. I've been holed up looking for answers. I know this though.....life can throw you curve balls, but it doesn't mean it isn't worth getting back up, dusting yourself off and trying to get on with it.

Grand opening and a story

My friend Cindy has been a trailblazer in the circles that I travel. She is one of those entrepreneurial women who had a vision and a belief in her abilities. She inspires with those abilities by showing us how to bring beauty to our surroundings with sophisticated, timeless furnishings. She started Haley's Cottage with a strong belief that the dream to open her own shop was a way to express the creative soul within. And even after 15 years she has managed to remain relevent in the ever evolving world of interior boutiques. I don't think I need to tell you that it hasn't been easy. The last couple years have proven to be among the most challenging for those who have the dream to follow. And this my friends, I know a thing or two about. But she continues to rise above and to do so with amazing grace. I am thrilled that Cindy is still going strong. And even more thrilled that she has been gracious enough to allow me to bring a little of what Gatherings was about to the mix.

But the real news is that Cindy has found a beautiful new location! Downtown Kirkland just seemed like the perfect place for her. And Kirkland seems pretty excited to have her there!

Please join us on Friday March 26th from 6pm-9pm for her grand opening.

We'll both be there along with local artist Kris Watkins and her beautiful French inspired decor. It will be a wonderful evening of fun surrounded by stunning interiors along with some pretty amazing and inspiring people! Hope you can make it!!

Good things really do come

I am sorry you guys.......I see that there are still people out there who are interested, so I do feel a sense of responsibility to keep you all informed as to what is happening in this crazy life of mine. At least from time to time. My time and energy as of late have been refocused on my family, trying to save the world (or at least my neighborhood) and my business (note....business last.)

Last year and the beginning of this year have been a very tough one for our family. My youngest son has been ill off and on for quite a while. He has had many days of excruciating pain and many of limited pain. We have pursued many avenues trying to understand what has gripped our little guy. No one had a complete answer as to what it could be until we took him to Childrens Hospital last year for some pretty invasive testing. It was there that he was diagnosed with IBS. It has been devastating to say the least, for him, as well as us. He does have his moments of joy though.....days when he can forget. But most of the time he hurts. I closed my business last year with much emotion. It was the hardest thing I thought I would ever go through. But this.....this makes the business closing feel like a cake walk. And although I have questioned why the forces that be allowed me to fail I realize now that it was a blessing. My little one needs me and at least right here and right now, this is exactly where I need to be.

I think I will save the "saving the world" explanitory for another post. But let's just say, to anyone who has ever dealt with a rogue HOA......I have a new understanding of what frustration and exasperation power hungry people can induce on humanity. And let's just say, it ain't pretty.

Mind over matter

Having made the commitment to get back on the proverbial horse again, I have been finding myself a little anxious. Make no mistake, I have some pretty awesome new pieces, as well as many gorgeous antique pieces, on their way to the new place. I guess part of the reason is.....I'm a bit aprehensive on whether the market has really improved. I still hear the media talking about things in such a negative way (this, to be sure has been a thorn in my side. Why are we so willing to listen to the interpretations of news organizations who are so blatantley looking for the next big disaster all under the guise of reporting the news? Fact is, it is about ratings and selling advertising) it's really so discouraging. Yesterday, I had a conversation with a wholesaler who said that once Obama's health care reform was buried, things will get better and people will start spending money. Really? Like this is the one thing that is driving the economy? Ummmmm....having a hard time with that one. Anyway, what do you think? Is everything still doom and gloom or do you feel a flicker of hope? I promise this post is only a small detour. I will get back to the pretties, my dears, soon enough.

To my dear friends and loyal customers a new opportunity has introduced itself. One that allows me to bring some of the best of what Gatherings had to offer back to life. A dear friend and one of my biggest supporters, has made me an offer I couldn't pass up. Cindy, owner of Haley's Cottage in Mill Creek Town Center, recently signed on the dotted line for a brand new, second location on Park Lane in downtown Kirkland, Wa. She has graciously invited me to keep a part of what Gatherings was all about alive in her new store location until the time is right to re-open a new store of my own. How could I refuse? I love Cindy's store and can truly say this dear, dear friend is one of the reasons I decided to open Gatherings. She has been an inspiration as well as a mentor for many, many years. From the very first time I stepped into her beautiful boutique in Snohomish ten years ago and found a kindred spirit, til' now, Cindy has, and continues to be, a step above the rest. So there it is. I promise to keep you informed on the official opening, but it will be some time in mid-February. And of course you will have a front row seat at the Grand opening!

Liquored up.....the fine art of mixology

As many of you know, I have been diligently working on a few projects around my home during my hiatus. One of the most daunting for me has been putting together a serviceable cocktail bar. One of my favorite pieces of furniture saved for my personal use when I closed my shop, was a wonderful bamboo bar with collapsable sides. I knew it could make a warm statement about who we really are, relaxed and well....let's just say, not afraid to booze it up once and a while. Not wanting to forget all the accoutrements for mixology, I began searching for the right equipment. Much to my delight, my new favorite blogger, my favorite and my best, just happens to be working on converting a secretary into a bar and was debating color choices. How excited I was to read that Rita Konig, former editor from the now defunct Domino Magazine (insert heavy sigh here) is writing for the NYT (apparently for a while too) and just happened to have a post on the subject here. I love her (even though she somewhat dissed me about visiting my shop when she came to Seattle....read my comment about it here #47), though there had been a heavy debate in the past about her contribution to Domino, I found her writing to be relevant and worth a read. So, after a shopping trip to buy what I think I need, and what he said I need, in the way of bar coolness, I will give you a peak in a soon to be published post. Until then, go visit my favorite and my best.......she is a hoot!

Where have I been? Let me tell you.....

I wanted to let you know I am still here. Having finally muddled thru the holiday and facing the new year, I feel such a sense of relief! I know I have been neglectful of this little ole' blog and I wouldn't be surprised if I have lost you all together, but......I hope you might still check on me from time to time.

So....I guess I had better catch up. I am still trying to get my house in order (so to speak), and have veered off coarse a bit. The powder room is still waiting for the floors to be layed and since I knew it would take an act of God to make that happen (did you know that sub-contractors promises are not to be believed....duh), I decided to focus on another thorn. Why is it there are those of us who seem to possess the good sense to know ones limits, and then there is me? I mean......why do I instinctively gravitate to ulcer inducing limits all to achieve that "moment" of well, the awwwwwww (imagine the choir here) factor. Okay, some clarity here.......

We have lived in our little humble abode for 13 years. When you enter, we have a room to the left that has always been uninhabitable. It has been my storage room, a makeshift office, an assembly room (when I did my wholesale gig) and a storage room, again. Never have I felt that it was a true extension of our home, and I have struggled with the funtionality of this space. It is a bit isolated from the rest of the home and I have never really come up with the perfect use. I simply hung curtains on the french doors and closed them out of embarrassment. So, when we had invited a few members of my family for Christmas dinner around the first week of December, I made a vow to the hubs that the room would be dressed and ready for it's new life as a dining room. Now, this wasn't a promise I had envisioned being insurmountable. I had slowly been reworking some of the furniture and art into my home and it was getting to a point where I could actually see what was in there (it was a bit like Christmas....I kept finding all the little treasures I had stuffed in there and completely forgotten about), and I really thought it wouldn't be that big of a deal to get paint on the walls and bang it out. Ummmm, can you say dilussional? I kinda forgotten just a few details like......the moldings had never been painted, the walls were splattered with paint and filled with holes, big holes (my prototypes were always on display and we did a lot of the finish work on my merchandise in the space). The lighting had been removed....sold it (it was a gorgeous crysal empire)! The carpet was filthy and stained and there were staples nails and screws imbedded in it.

So, during what could have been a stress free holiday (something I was not accustomed to being in retail the last 30 years of my life), I just had to prove to my husband I wasn't a wack job. Long story short, it was ready and the table was set and sparkling by the time the relatives showed up. Never mind I had been up until 2 am Christmas eve shampooing the carpet. I did it, and although it wasn't the complete perfection I had hoped for (I may be a wack job, but I did sense my limitations to some degree), it turned out beautifully, even if I do say so myself!

Now......I am still waiting to hear from the contractor. He's not returning my calls and I am thinking he has given me the shaft, surprise (yah, right!) So, I have decided to look elsewhere for a tile setter (the thought of going out there again is really pissing me off), but, in the meantime.....I have an office/spare bedroom I need to bang out before my girlfriend comes for a visit at the end of this month. Did I mention......it is now inexplicably filled with crap from my previous room? Oy vay.

Details: A look inside

I have promised you all a little peak into my humble abode. It has been a bit of a ride to get it to this point. It still needs a little work but....I'll be brave and let you take a look.

First thing you might notice is it is small. But we love how comfortable the space feels. We have a screened porch off of the eating area in the kitchen. The plan is to relocate the porch and expand the space into the existing porch and make that a dining space. We will then rework our kitchen so the flow is a little better. But that will be a little farther out in our future.

Many of you might recognize the large piece of furniture next to the chair. It served me well as a back counter in my shop, and although it is a large piece (10 feet long!) I knew I couldn't just leave it. It ended up being the perfect size for my family room. The wall behind the chair needs something.....I'm thinking maybe a floor mirror leaning against the wall? Seems like a good way to hide switch plates and cable connections. What do you think?

The branch sculpture has a hand applied silver leaf finish. It really is one of my favorite pieces in this space.

I have mentioned a new sectional to you a few times in the past. Well, it's finally here and we love it! Super comfy and the nailhead trim gives it the perfect finishing touch.

The curtains are a silk dupioni and were purchased at, get this.......Lowes. I bought ring clips and attached to the top instead of running the pole thru the pocket. The bamboo shades were bought off the shelf and are the perfect fit on the french doors. I had the peacock vase from Shine and plopped a vintage disco ball on top. At night the can lighting reflects off of the mirror and creates a beautiful reflection on the ceiling. The lamp is from Global views and was one of my lux purchases (totally splurged on that one!) And the riddler was from a container auction (score!).

There it is......a work in progress to be sure, but it feels like it's coming along. Thanks for indulging me!

A Love Train

Brooke over at Velvet & Linen has a great give away going on to celebrate her 300th post. A colabrative effort that tastemaker Mark Sage so generously offered to contribute to. I had first discovered Mark after one of my favorite sales reps had mentioned that they were trying to land his company for her showroom. When I went to check his website out, I about fell off my chair! Until reading about his antique store in a post Brooke did a while back, I hadn't realized he had two different sides to his business....antiques he sells thru his store Love Train Antiques and reproductions his company manufactures. Here is a taste of the reproduction side, Bobo Intriguing Objects.

Wanted: Windsor update

In one of my previous posts I promised to give you a peak into one of my client's projects. She asked if I wouldn't consider doing a kitchen facelift. Of course I was excited from the start, especially during our first meeting where we both agreed the inspiration for the space would be this gorgeous room by Windsor Smith. How could I say no? My intention was to begin with "before" pics but unfortunately blogger wasn't too cooperative (picking my battles here).

This fabric is something she just happened to have been holding onto for awhile. It was a perfect fit! Pulling it all together will be a rich brown called French Press by Benjamin Moore on the walls. What is so great about this space is it encompasses a breakfast nook with wonderful character. Wainscoting, thick moldings and casements all getting a fresh coat of crisp white. The rooms have a southern exposure and get a ton of light too. Makes the brown a little less intimidating when it has such a wonderful contrast.

The window above the kitchen sink began with a wood scalloped valance and a single big cyclops of a can light! The solution was a set of halogen pivot lights which really brightened up the area. The valance will be making another appearance but with a much more Windsor feel to it.

This is the handmade glass tile we have on order. The plan is applying the tile all along the underside of the cabinets and up each side of the window to the top in a random application. The opposite wall has more cabinets as well as her stove and this wall will also receive the design.

And here is a sneak peak of one of our details. The crystal light under the shade was my clients and is vintage. We found this drum shade, disassembled the existing chandelier adding the shade just below the bobeche at the top. The result is a gorgeous crystal chandelier peaking out underneath a very clean modern drum. You can also see a little of the brown on the walls and the crisp white molding. Love it!

Crowning glory

I had a bit of a rant a little while back. Lots of excuses, not so much decor. Got a few e-mails asking for pics of our paint project and the new soffit I had built (with my two own little hands), so I thought I would oblige. My home is not big or dramatic, it is about eighteen hundred square feet and although I will probably never feel completely satisfied with the way it looks, I finally feel like it has some pretty good dressing (on the outside anyway).

The railing was actually one my first ever building projects. It isn't by any means perfect but I am probably the only one who sees the little flaws. At least that's what I am going with.

This is the crowning glory of the outside project, the soffit. I decided to go with a tongue and grove cedar and frame it with high grade 1x6 cedar that when stained, created a two tone effect. The finishing touch, a white vinyl molding that creates a dramatic contrast against the dark stained cedar. I had one little obstacle to contend with though, we had an outlet wired in the corner of the old ceiling for easy access to electricity when we strung up our Christmas lights. I thought about dropping the box down and having it on the outside of the soffit, but I really didn't want the outlet to be in full view. My solution was to make blocks that would drop down a little lower in the corners, attach magnets to the underside of the block where the outlet was so that when we want to plug in our Christmas lights, all we have to do is pop out the block in that corner. What I really loved about this solution was that it became a small detail that made a big statement to the end result.

A work in progress

I know, I know I am starting this post a day late. In my defense, I couldn't find my camera (again) and was searching madly. I had promised to show you where I started, where I am at and where I am headed with my powder room and laundry room reno. But first things first! Some serious inspiration was in order and I found it thru one of my daily reads. Velvet & Linen.

Brooke is the author of Velvet & Linen, one of the first blogs I ever began reading. And I have to say, one of the reasons I decided to take the leap into blogging. Her blog has been a source of unending inspiration and beauty. One I can only hope to aspire to. Among the first posts I happened upon was a series about Steve, her talented architect husband. And it just happened to be about bathrooms. I was hooked!

The eye toward detail is truly stunning! I have serious shower envy here.

Who wouldn't want to take a soak here? However, this bathroom rivals the view.....don't you think?

And this picture is what single handedly convinced me that Calcutta marble is the material I am going to be using. I love how Steve took the marble up the wall in a running brick pattern. A wonderful take on a subway tile design.

This is where I am going to cringe a bit. My photo's are no where near as beautiful as Brooke's,
but.....I will be brave. When I get to the finished product I promise the pics will be better. First, I chose a beautiful brown for the walls called bittersweet. I knew at this point the way to get a really crisp look was to add some thick moldings, tongue and groove paneling on the ceiling and paint it out in a high gloss white. The lighting is on its way out and I will be posting a few options for you to consider.

A little brighter pic here. I removed all the door moldings and baseboards in preparation for the new flooring in, you guessed it.........Calcutta!

So, here is the reason my laundry room is getting involved here. It is connected to the powder room. The flooring is a builders special vinyl. Not my first choice, but it served us well while I was preoccupied with my business over the years.

This last pic is the one I cringe over the most (clutter, mushroom lighting.....ugh!), the laundry room. We installed the cabinets this last spring and they are getting primed, the doors will be reinstalled and all with a fresh coat of high gloss white paint. I plan on finishing them off by adding height with either another custom built cabinet or a soffit to the ceiling. The same ceiling treatment that was done in the bathroom will be applied, as well as new lighting.

That's kind of the plan. I will keep you informed and show you my progress from time to time, as well as ask for some of your input on design ideas. I also am planning to add a few surprises here and there. Hope you guys enjoy the process. Oh, and thanks Brooke for allowing me to use some of your gorgeous pictures. I've had dining rooms on my mind as of late. I was browsing thru my pics and realized that I had hundreds of photoshoots of dining rooms. I also have hundreds of bathrooms. I'm getting ready to do both rooms in my home and I have to say, Windsor Smith's is really doing it for me as far as a dining room look goes. But I am putting the cart before the horse here. The bathroom and laundry room (they are connected) are going to be up first. I'll post my inspirations first and then show you where I am at in the process on Monday. Stay tuned.

Pro-files......interior genius

Having time to research and dream up visions of beautiful rooms has opened my horizons to truly visionary interior designers. I felt that from time to time, I would like to introduce some of you to those who I truly believe stand out. So, I bring to you my first installment of inspiring designers worthy of a look.

Wayne Nathan and Carol Egan began their foray together in 2000, opening Nathan Egan interiors in the Lafayette district of New York. What I love about them is how diverse they are in their design concepts. Each of their projects are fresh and vibrant, with an eye toward a more forward vibe, but still managing to be remain very approachable . This is tradition with a very current twist.

I fell hard for this kitchen. I adore the bar stools!

I believe this may be the Thom lounge in New York. This is the kind of brilliant design that has made them stars in Manhattan.

In any design, it truly is the details that upon first glance may go unnoticed, taking a good design concept that much further and making it brilliant. I love the double gilt inlay on these dining chairs. True perfection!

So, when I saw this picture I didn't pick up on it right away, but the nail head is the same detail I added to my new sectional. It really does take it one step further without making too loud of a statement.

A while back I had a beautiful vintage barrel front buffet that I had envisioned having a high gloss ebony automobile paint in place of the tired mahogany wood finish. When I had mentioned what my plans were with the piece to a group of women coming through my shop, they gasped (I think if they had some rope I might have been hung high!). Well, I did it and it turned out fantastic! And guess what ladies......I'm gonna do it again!

I love the traditional feel of this space, with all the lovely architectural details here. And if you look in the left hand corner of this pic, you can see a blown up graphic of a paint chip. It seems to be somewhat of a signature look for them and it is simply a brilliant way to add a pop of color.

I would love to have a room like this! The sink is spectacular.

I have been adoring orange and tobacco as of late. It looks so crisp with the white and browns from the wood tones here.

Labor, taxes and other momentous occasions

Okay guys.....I am still here (I think) and feeling a little nostalgic. First and foremost.....I am still breathing, my family still loves me and I still feel overwhelmed (even after two months without the shop! This sucks....I wish for nothing but some sense of normalcy!!).

Just to give you a sense of what life has been like around my domain, the day I buttoned up the shop was the same day my garage became inexplicably swollen (my friend Cindy told me whatever you do, do not get a storage unit. Something about a Christmas tree that ended up costing her a couple grand?). That was a horror story I did not wish to see (I hate horror stories), so I reasoned with the hubs that it would be ridiculous to entertain the idea of storing merchandise and paying anymore than what has already been paid (or owed) for any of it. I now have two paths....one to the garage door and one to the freezer, and every time I go out there I feel my blood pressure go up. Understanding why it is necessary makes it no less exasperating!

The other thing was a commitment I made to have our house painted back in June. We had scheduled this event in September thinking that, surely by then life would be at a much more normal pace and I would have plenty of time to get the house ready for some new dressing. I would equate painting to childbirth....and I'm certain I didn't sign up for that (the hubs had the big "V" along time ago....this wasn't suppose to happen G'dammit)! I also took this opportunity to upgrade all my lighting and build a soffit on the front porch.....yes, I did it and it looks frickin' fantastic (I have no shame in tooting my horn here. It was the "crowning" of the glorious event). I am still cleaning up cigarette butts from the crew but my house looks dang good.

But, looks are fleeting, particularly when another momentous occasion comes baring down on you.....TAXES. I had to open up my books and re-live the beginning of the end for the shop. So, you probably have figured out by now, I am a procrastinator. I put off filing my taxes for 2008 and filed an extension hoping some miracle would happen and they might go away. Let's just say I am a decorator.....never, ever do I remember signing up for bookkeeping 101. Hard to admit but, clearly I should have. Three weeks sitting at my dining room table pouring over receipts, sales, and purchases became a nightmare. And the clincher was, I owed!! Now, I am convinced I probably did something wrong, and I did look for help. Seems that the one recession proof profession out there would be your local neighborhood numbers guy. There was no room at the inn (office) for little ole' me. And I really, really didn't want to work with the same guy I had the previous year (mister "do not ask me questions you dumb*%#* woman....can't you see I'm busy making money"). But I had to come crawling back and take my lumps.

So, it is over for now. Still licking my wounds but, I am determined to get myself a good numbers guy or gal before the end of 2009. Perhaps, I might get back some of that self respect I mailed off on October 15th. So there it is, I had a good "poor me" weekend and am ready to shed my bathrobe, go out and do something constructive. Maybe.....oh I don't know, finish painting the molding I told my husband I would do way back when we had our house built in 97'? Did I mention I am a procrastinator?

It's finally over and I feel like I am just beginning to find my groove. The shop is all buttoned up and the stitches are out (yeah!) and I can hardly wait to find out where fate takes me from here. All I have to say is with all the wonderful things that couldn't find homes (some will most definitely find a home with me) and all the beautiful new merchandise on the way, there is lots to look forward to! Oh....and when I find my camera I will be posting picks of my new clients remodeling project (I am going mad!! I can't find it anywhere!). But until then.....a little decor porn to appease.

Been a little blue as of late. Always feels like this time of year I get a little melancholy. I think the closing of the shop has taken it's toll on me emotionally as well as physically. Had a little run in with a chandelier and ended up with seven stitches on one finger and a few cuts and bruises. My young son was there when it happened and just about needed to be sedated. I don't know about your family, but something about gushing blood tends to create a lot of drama around the hubs and kids. Anyway.....I still have a few more things to finish up before I turn the key and walk away. Even with everything gone and a few dings and nicks on the walls and floors, the empty space is still so pretty. I will miss it tremendously. But I am looking forward to what comes next....after the stitches come out!

I know I have said for a while now the end was nearing. And after this Friday, August 14th, at 5pm it will be official. Gatherings store front will be no more. Downtown Marysville will be beginning it's annual Homegrown festival and the street will be filled with vendors selling their wares, so be prepared for off street parking and quite a few people milling around. It will be my last hurrah, and as such, I will be working my tail off to sell off everything!

And, for an added incentive, everything will be 60% off for my last day.

This floor is the bomb

Been gone for an extended weekend in Port Townsend. I had the pleasure of staying with my friends in their beautifully restored cottage that happens to have a sweet little guest house. It was a weekend filled with beautiful wines, amazing food (think double dark chocolate cookies, crisp outside, soft dark chocolate inside, with a beautiful red wine blend of syrah and merlot, used purely for dunking....heaven!) and even more amazing people. So, I'm back and trying to get my motivation factor to kick in.

I recently began to forge ahead with redecorating our home by ordering and receiving the table, and a new sectional sofa (picture to come). The thing is, now I'm having major anxiety about the flooring in our family room. So.....I have been on the hunt, looking for what I want. Thought I would share some of my favorite inspirations!

This first set of pics are from Phoebe Howard's East Hampton home. Having serious palpitations over these floors.

Torn between darker floors and this more honey colored finish. But I think I might have come up with the ultimate! You'll just have to wait to find out what I mean.

It isn't over

Having had my shop has been a wonderful journey of self discovery. I have been exposed to many genres of design, as well as many wonderful, insanely talented and creative people. And I have been given access to some of the most beautiful products, produced by stylemakers to the few, as well as the masses. But the one thing that I feel has had the most impact on me, is the sense of willingness to accept change. It has forever made me more open to the possibilities in this life. I evolved into this process of self discovery by accident. Beginning the journey with many expectations of myself and with a very definite idea of what I wanted the shop to be. Having begun in the antique business, I had many followers who came to expect a certain look from me, and I did not disappoint. But I found from early on I was beginning to yearn for something different. Unfortunately, it wasn't something everyone embraced. Change, for some, brings us outside of that sense of comfort we instinctually gravitate to. But for me it was exciting! A challenge to find it within myself to marry the old with the new, the traditional with the contemporary, the European with the ethnicity of say....Moroccan. It was what made me feel like getting up in the morning and making the effort to get the shop open. I realize now it all has been a journey that has opened my eyes to what I think is my true calling. More than anything, it has given me a sense of purpose that I know speaks to who I am and why I'm here. And so, even though my shop is about to exhale it's last breath.....I know it hasn't been in vain. On the contrary, it has been all worth it!

So, I have been feeling a little guilty. I kinda left town and didn't say a word. In my defense....it was really last minute. But my family and some very dear friends decided to go for it. We rented a beautiful home in Chelan. And let me tell you...I realize now why so many of my customers and friends love it. I hadn't been in about 28 years and ohhhh my, how it has evolved!

What hasn't changed is the amazing scenery. Chelan is unsurpassed in it's beauty. Mother nature at her best. And we are truly the caretakers of some of the most breathtaking landscapes here in Washington. Living in such close proximity to the ocean and mountains really is a privilege that I will forever live in awe of.

But part of the experience of a vacation for me, is still the accommodations! After some digging, we came up with this wonderful cottage, plenty of space for two families and a swimming pool to boot.

This kitchen was a dream. Everything was top of the line and amply stocked.

Having just learned the game of pinochle, this set-up couldn't have been any more perfect (sans the light). The kids swam for hours and hours, while we played cards....being able to keep an eye on them and still get in some adult fun!

This was the view from the patio and we took advantage of it every morning for breakfast, and every evening for dinner and cocktails.

In the years since my last visit, Chelan has become a premier wine region. Since the guys aren't real big wine drinkers, they took off for the day with the boys to the water park while my dear friend Cathy and I took off for a day of serious girl time. First stop....Hard Row to Hoe winery.

Now, I'm not one to be lured in by kitchy names. I wasn't sold on this place, even when we pulled up to the very fetching building with the awesome graphics. But sometimes taking a chance and going outside of the box can pay off.....

after all, we gotta meet Rudy (isn't he cute! Hubba, hubba). But all kidding aside...a more passionate winemaker could not be found! And after hearing the story of how the name for the winery came about (you'll have to read about it here), we were enamored.

This is Judy, owner of Row to Hoe. She was a lot of fun too, and quite informative. I loved how she challenged us to identify the different scents from each of the wines we tasted. I really, really want to brush up on this. It was very challenging! But we left with quite a few bottles and some wonderful recommendations for other wineries and places to eat.

Onto Tildio winery. This too, was a wonderful experience. We ran into a group of ladies who had booked a limo tour of the wine region here and they were having a bit too much fun! We had a good chuckle...unfortunately, at their expense. They weren't as interested in tasting as they were in having a good time. Can't say as I blame them...it was definitely what the wineries and the limo service want to promote. The winemaker here was equally as informative....I fell in love with a limited bottling of Robusto. It was a luscious aromatic wine and they had two cases left. I helped put a dent in that though!! Lunch was on the agenda from here. So onto....

Vin Du Lac winery. The winery is situated on the lake and has a beautiful peak-a-boo view of a resort. The grounds were lovely, and although I wasn't as impressed with my lunch....Cathy raved about her smoked chicken and beet salad. The surroundings made up for the meal though....I was smitten, and alas, redemption was found in the form of an amazing pumpkin creme brulee.

We ran into downtown and peeked through a couple of the boutiques before our appointment for a pedicure at Campbells Resort and Spa (I told you this was the ultimate girls day)! Pure heaven.

Later, we met up with the boys after their day of fun in the sun and changed for dinner. Tonight, we were going out and trying the recommendations from Rudy for a meal and the best view in town at Tsillan Winery.

Stunning indeed.

The next day was another day of fun in the sun on the water. The boys rented a boat and we were off for another adventure. It was hot, hot, hot....a perfect day to be brave and take a swim (this lake is fed by mountain run off and is cccooooldddd).

The kids and some of the adults tubed (yah, that includes me)!! I will spare myself the embarrassment of going into detail here....needless to say, grace is not my middle name and the water was like a jolt!!

After many days and nights of good friends, good food and lots of laughter, we spent our last evening on the beach roasting marsh mellows, enjoying the most amazing sunset, sipping cocktails and listening to music wafting down from the house above. It was a perfect ending and a wonderful vacation that will be remembered.

Now that the shop will be closed here soon, I am hopeful we can enjoy many more memories like this. Although the shop has been my pride and joy for the last few years...it hasn't been without a price. The luxury of taking a spur of the moment opportunity with my family like this wasn't even an option. Good things do sometimes come from lost hope. At least that's what I'm going with here. This must be what was in the cards....right? It does feel good.

Back when I opened the shop in 2007, I recognized that trying to get the word out about the shop wasn't going to be easy. Getting the attention of any publiation would be a crap shoot. But, none the less, I decided to give it a whirl. I e-mailed every damn publication out there, along with pics and a bit of information, just praying anyone might pay attention and see that perhaps the shop might be worth a second look. After many attempts and a lot of let downs (thank you Domino, Sunset and Country Living for pulling my chain and leaving me hanging) I had pretty much given up. It seemed that living in the shadow of Seattle was to be my fate. So, I find it ironic that it would be that Seattle Magazine would eventually come a knocking. Not the biggest publication out there, but one that counted since most of the readers would be from the immediate area. How sad it is that it would happen to hit the newstands 3 weeks before I close. Life is too funny and a bit ironic at times...isn't it?

I like to think my life might magically become neat and orderly AG (after gatherings). But I know reality bites. I mean, nothing ever really ends up being like we imagine. Learning to roll with it is the best most of us could hope for. Hence, I am getting ready for phase three of the closing of the shop and I still have a lot of gorgeous stuff left! Which leaves me a little panic stricken and second guessing my choices. Was I totally off when I bought these things? Did I miss the mark? Is this why I really couldn't make it?

I have been a little waylayed as of late (the store has been like an unruly child). So my yard hasn't seen a lot of action. I have weeds who have made there home quite impenetrable (I hate those *%#** weeds). But lets just say, if the landscape gods were to find me worthy of a little recreating of my yard....anyone of these would do!

So I have been contemplating how my friend Leah could possibly have ever found the time to put together this? She must have super human abilities or somethin'(or maybe she does her gardening at night? I have visions of her out there with her miners cap on clipping her boxwood). Anyway...I am counting down the days before I have my life back. Maybe I'll get something done....or maybe not.

So I made a comment on a blog that kinda called into task a conversation on a podcast I had found. The podcast is being put on by three very talented women and...one of them the great Joni. What is so lame is....I directed my comment to her, believing her to be the one who got me a little riled. Turns out I was directing it to the wrong person and ultimately, why did I let myself get riled up enough to do it in the first place? Yikes! Somedays you just want to take it all back. Where is the rewind button anyway?

Mulling over the details

Now that I might have a little time on my hands I have decided to take the plunge and start decorating my home (FINALLY...Yeah!!) I am starting with my dining room and family room. The two rooms are separated but I have an opportunity to work with a wonderful line of furnishings and will be placing an order for a new sofa as well as a set of chairs for the family room. But today is about my wish list for the dining room...and some inspiration is in order.

Each one of these pics convey the feel I would like to evoke in my new dining room but I must start by replacing the flooring and knocking out a wall that separates the kitchen from the room we have decided will become our new eating space. I will keep you posted and begin the process of putting up pics showing where we are starting and hopefully the end result. But I will leave you with a little taste (pun intended!) of what is on the way!

A storied idea

Many of you know I have been in a very contemplative place as of late. So I kinda thought these images were apropos. I have always romanced the idea of having a library/office. I love books and the idea of surrounding myself with them strikes a cord. If I could have my own any of these would do!

So I threw this image in because it makes me feel happy. I know it really isn't a library but the way the boxes are organized it is very reminiscent of the feel (this is a fantasy shot for sure. Who lives like this????)

Isn't it ironic....

So sorry I have been MIA lately. Trying to sort through the shop and get everything organized. I also took a little vacation and visited a dear friend over an extended weekend. If any of you have ever been to Port Townsend you will know what I mean when I say how soul inspiring this little bohemian town is. A truly lovely historical coastal town. Something about the beach and the smell of saltwater makes my spirit soar (thank you Nance, I needed that)!

Unfortunately, it's back to reality....I knew this would be difficult, but the hardest part has been trying to look forward. Many of you have asked me what my plans are, and the answer seems to be elusive. I know it will include getting my website figured out (yes...I am still trying to get my products page off my to do list). I will be introducing all the new lines and products I have found that will be exclusive to Gatherings....soon, I promise. In the meantime, if you haven't been by the shop as of late, there are still some fabulous finds and soon things will be slashed again! Come take a look for yourself....there are new things arriving everyday!

Thank you EVERYONE for all of your words of encouragement and love. I can not think of a time when I felt so cared for. It is restorative and brings with it a sense of comfort. I am trying to find a bright side to this turn of events and I have to say it must be all of you. The blogging community is filled with such beautiful and giving souls.

I am in a very contemplative phase right now...trying to decide where I will continue once I close the doors at the shop. I believe Gatherings will continue. It will obviously be a different entity than it's previous life. But it still has potential. In the meantime, please stop by the shop. I love meeting my fellow bloggers. I have learned that many of you may not comment but are still out there. And I simply adore meeting you!

This isn't a post I had thought I would make. It means the end to a love affair I have been involved in for quite a few years. Ultimately, I knew it eventually would come to an end, but I wanted it to be on my terms. But.....end it must and my heart is broken.

Gatherings will be no more....

She has been a wonderful friend. A source of unending inspiration and possibilities.

She has been a place for friends and family to congregate and enjoy lively conversations over many, many glasses of wine.

A place where one could escape and find beauty when all around was dull and gray.

I have enjoyed the evolution of her life....like watching a child blossom and become a vibrant being.

She has always beckoned to me...insistent that I pay attention to her many facets

My love, my passion, my joy...

I will miss you.

Will you miss her too?

Thank you everyone for giving me the strength to move on. Your words of love and support mean the world to me. Although, I am so sad to say goodbye, I know it will not be forever. I will be back soon.....I promise.

This has been a tough week for me. I've had to make many decisions and they haven't been easy. There are times I might wish for another life....one in which things could be simple and clear. Where every breath I take is one that brings with it a sense of purpose. Today, it seems clear that life doesn't always end with fulfillment. Today, I wonder where this life will take me from here. Perhaps, it will include living here....

in this ethereal city, surrounded by beauty and potential...and this amazing view.

Having lived in Marysville in the early years of my marriage, I'm not sure how I missed Oosterwyk's bakery. I can maybe give myself a pass to some extent...I was a pretty busy gal with a full time job and a young child. I didn't venture far from my usual haunts, and the idea of finding a gem in my own neighborhood didn't occur to me. This was a couple of decades ago, and Marysville wasn't the kind of place you would expect to find anything beyond the local pay n' save. When I found the building that would ultimately become Gatherings there next to it was a quaint little Dutch bakery. Turns out the bakery has been here for over thirty years and the family that runs it is now into the third generation, carrying on the tradition of serving our community the most delicious baked goods I have ever tasted. They serve a killer lunch too! But, here is my ultimate weakness....

It's all about the architecture here (and art installations...very restrained, but makes a statement). Beautiful, open space with amazing light. Could really, really be one happy girl living in this loft!

We had a taste of summer today...beautiful blue skies and a balmy evening. Tonight I am dreaming of a wonderful community park where our neighbors join together and enjoy an evening of old fashion entertainment. It's just around the corner too!

Having a slow day at the shop and decided to do some web surfing. Found more from Windsor Smith and a few pics from Domino. Loving the black leather chair in pic #1 and the azure candelabra set in #2....actually, I love everything in pic #2 but the chairs. Not my first choice. Would be a happy girl with the chandelier in pic #3. And pic #4 is my dining room....kidding! I could only wish, but someday....

Going to New York!

I am planning a trip this summer to the New York International Gift Show and I'm currently working on my itinerary. My goal is to bring you the best and most unique in interior accessories and furniture
that is available to the trade. But I couldn't make the trip to the big apple without doing some personal shopping for inspiration! One of the must see stops will definitely be Flair. This boutique is gorgeous and I'm thinking, just might be the highlight of my trip!

Black walls are definitely a bold and fashionable statement. But with the beautiful architecture and furnishings, it becomes quietly elegant and timeless.

These watery green slopping arm chairs are stunning! And I think the rug is a faux python leather, which is simply brilliant.

I loved this photo just because of the silvered foo dog lamps. I don't think they could be more chic.

What more can I say?

So if anyone out there might have any other suggestions on must see shopping during my trip, let me know! I'm still working out my schedule and am open to your input. Thanks!

If any of you haven't figured out yet....I live in the Pacific Northwest where the average rainfall is about, well, off the charts!! Today was glorious and tomorrow is predicted to be even better (yeah!!). I actually have a day off tomorrow and it is going to be heaven. But....for those days when it isn't so bright (and we know it isn't over yet) I kinda thought this might make up for the lack of light that I am forever in pursuit of.

One of the best parts about owning my own boutique is the hunt for new product. I admit that I do get a thrill when I see things that give me inspiration. One of the many lines I totally love is Global Views. They carry such sophisticated collections, and I can always find something that I can't live without. So, in another post I mentioned I thought that GV deserved a post. Well, here goes!!

I thought I should start with the down and dirty. This is just one of the many joys of owning your own shop...packing peanuts, bubble wrap and breaking down cardboard! Wish I had a stock boy!!

And here it is! I think this might be my all time favorite mirror...it's gorgeous!

This sconce is so amazing! Beautifully polished nickel finish.

This convex sunburst mirror has been one of my best selling. The ginger jars are GV too!

This is a solid brass side table with a mirrored top. It is also available in a cocktail table version.

This mirror is made of a polished hand wrought iron. It's called the Paris mirror and it's just as stunning as it's namesake.

Some of GV's most unusual pieces has to be their lighting. This one is a floor lamp called the Big Pill. I love the shade on this. And I have to tell you...this lamp is what ended up being the inspiration for the front half of the shop. There is a table top version of it also available!

This is the arrow mirror and, yes..it too is amazing.

Tortoise blown glass pear. It is at least 40" tall!

Sooooo....what do ya think? Now....here is where I tell you that you need to come and see for yourself why Global Views, and all the other beautiful lines I want you to make your own, are worth a trip to my little shop (shameless plug...hey, a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do)!

Been dreaming about having a room, just one room, that might look like any of these. Windsor Smith is my hero. What makes her designs so fabulous is the ease in which she combines tradition architecture with contemporary elements making everything feel so approachable. There is something very familiar about her designs. Could be she has been published everywhere. She also does a consultant gig for 1stdibs. Oh Windsor...I could be one happy girl if I had one room, just one.

The girls and I have been trying to make time to spend the day together. Ya know.... gossip, food, wine and SHOPPING!

We started our day at Pacific Galleries Antiques. A huge mall with just about every style and era of vintage and antique merchandise imaginable. This place is HUGE! Honestly, you need a whole day to see this place in it's entirety.

Decorno recently did a post on this mirror. It's pretty darn awesome in person. Love it!

This is from the same space as the last pic. The candelabra sconce made quite the statement. Very Phantom of the Opera. Yah, I loved it too. This is a dealer that anyone in the northwest who deals in antiques should be familiar with. Her name is Susan Wheeler aka Pink Lemonade. She always delivers the drama.

This booth is also one of my favs. Very industrial and pretty intriguing.

This is a dealer that is also quite well known. Lorie Bischoff of Soulful adornment. Her pieces are quite beautiful and unusual.

This is the aisle that takes forever! Case upon case, all stuffed to the limit with beautiful and grotesque well......stuff.

So this is where my camera gave up the ghost (I mean the batteries died). From here we left with our cash of goodies....many hours later, and went on a search for nourishment. The shopping was food for the soul...now we needed food for our bellies! Ended up in a little Italian restaurant down under the viaduct just off of first. Good food, excellent wine and a lot of laughter. After, we headed out to check out a couple of my personal favorite stores only to realize all were closed (note to self.... Monday, not a good day for shopping boutiques in downtown Seattle)....yah, ya let me down Great Jones. :( But we did manage to find more shopping down the street from GJ in the form of another antique mall at Pike Place. Not as much furniture... but plenty to look at.....and buy!!!

It was a good day and we were all exhausted. It was a good tired though :)

It's time!!

Even though the weather isn't wanting to cooperate, I am finally feeling a sense of optimism.

I am feeling the need to lighten up my surroundings....and with it the heavy burden of winter will soon be a distant memory.

The need isn't just about interior rooms. It is a need that encompasses outdoor rooms too.

Bringing with it a sense of renewal.

Ugh....I'm gettin' all philosophical here. Just letting ya know a change is a comin' :)

One of the most rewarding parts of owning my business is the thrill of discovering a treasure....sometimes when you least expect it. I recently came across an incredibly talented artist quite by accident. A lovely woman who has such exquisite taste and just the right eye for her craft. When I saw her artistry I new I would want it....and of coarse I had to have it. I bought a few of her stunning pieces and tried to come up with a way to introduce her to you. And so I am thrilled to do just that!

Gatherings is honored to announce a personal showing of Shay jewelry by Sheri Johnson.....Friday, April 10th 5pm to 8pm. What I LOVE about Sheri is that she uses old rosaries, with a combination of old medals, crosses, estate jewelry, semi-precious gems and sterling silver to make one of a kind necklaces, earrings and pins. They are truly breathtaking and I couldn't be more thrilled to bring her artistry to you. Check back the week before the event for an added incentive just for my readers!

I have a confession......I have been trying to find something to inspire me. It hasn't been easy to be inspired lately. I don't think I have to explain why. But I really wanted to give you something to convey a sense of who I am . So here it is.....

Searching for inspiration

As someone who is very visual, I find myself often dwelling on minute details. I have learned that I truly cannot find peace at night unless I tune out the background noise. But, there are still times that I find it virtually impossible. I find myself in this position usually three times a year. Early spring, mid-summer and, of coarse...right before the holiday. The reasons might appear obvious, but there is more to it than that. I am in a pursuit of sorts. What will inspire me? It could be a gorgeous French antique, maybe a beautiful giclee, or perhaps a color. I know that no matter what it might be I need to trust my instincts. Second guessing myself has lead to many a floor set fiascoe. I have also learned that, although trying to appeal to the masses might be important, it cannot be the only driving force. Many boutique owners have made the mistake of convincing themselves that the customer and the surroundings, ie. median income level, should dictate their inventory. I find this idea very discouraging. Mostly, because this perception leads to a fight for the same inventory. And very soon, home decor shops begin to look the same (I hate to say it...but this is what has happened to many of the surrounding towns and cities in our area). What has given me "food for the soul" is being true to myself, believing in my abilities and tuning out the naysayers. People are always inclined to let me know that they think I should be of the same cloth as surrounding shops. I find this idea a little perplexing. I am constantly being told I should be in Seattle, I ponder this idea....is it another way of saying...who do you think you are? Like having something outside of their comfort range automatically equates to assumming it's outside of their pocket book range. I couldn't disagree more. Maybe I'm too analytical? But I digress....I can only be who I am and if being successful means settling for sameness than I'll be closing my doors soon. And by the way, stay tuned, I will be back with my latest inspiration for the Spring! :)

It's a Beginning

Many times I have entertained the idea of starting a blog. It all seemed so daunting, a little intimidating and admittedly, left me a bit uneasy. Would you be interested in what I had to say? Do I have enough to say, and what will I say that might be intriguing enough that you would want to come back? So it is with a faith in my abilities, a sense of humor and a whole lot of optimism, I decide, why not? It isn't like it's rocket science (I say with a hint of wry), besides...I'm thinkin' it could be a lot of fun.

So...a little history. I am the owner of a interior boutique (you can take a look at Gatherings Home), mother, wife and all around do it yourselfer. In another life, henceforth known as BG (before gatherings), I worked tirelessly for a high end retailer, spent many a holiday season (twenty something!!) wondering what the heck I was doing, busting my ass and sacrificing my sanity only to benefit a soulless company. With a belief that there must be more, I quit my job and let fate take it's lead.

It all seems like a lifetime ago, but here I am, heading down another fork in the road, ready to share it all with you and hoping along the way it leads me to more self discovery. I promise to share with you, my loyal readers and customers, as much inspiration and hopefully, thought provoking topics that I can muster. I also promise not to make this blog all about my business (although in this economy, a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do!), and some of my posts will encompass more than just decor. All I ask in return is feedback. Let me know what you are thinking and if I am making a difference. As I become more comfortable in these shoes, and I find my way thru this new world, you will be my compass. Don't fail me!!
